Trump Warns Countries: Don’t Play Games with Tariffs After Supreme Court Ruling
US President Donald Trump has sent a strong message to other countries about tariffs. Just days after the Supreme Court struck down some of his major tariff plans, he warned that any nation trying to take advantage will face even tougher import taxes. This comes at a time when global trade is already tense, and many people are watching to see if it leads to bigger problems.
The whole issue started with a big decision from the US Supreme Court on February 20, 2026. In a 6-3 ruling, the court said Trump could not use a 1977 law called the International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA) to put broad tariffs on imports from almost every country. Trump had used this law to set emergency tariffs, claiming they were needed to fight trade imbalances and issues like drug trafficking from places like China, Mexico, and Canada. The court made it clear: that law does not give the president power to set tariffs like this. Congress holds the main authority over taxes and duties.

Trump did not stay quiet. On social media, he hit back hard. He called the Supreme Court decision “ridiculous” and posted this warning: “Any country that wants to ‘play games’ with the ridiculous supreme court decision, especially those that have ‘Ripped Off’ the US for years, and even decades, will be met with a much higher tariff, and worse, than that which they just recently agreed to. BUYER BEWARE!!!”
In simple terms, Trump is saying: if countries try to back out of recent trade deals or use the court ruling to push for lower US tariffs, he will respond with much higher ones. He even hinted at using other laws that could make things tougher.
Right after the ruling, Trump moved fast. He signed orders for a new global tariff starting at 10%, then quickly raised it to 15% on most imports. This uses a different part of trade law (Section 122 of the Trade Act of 1974), which allows temporary measures for up to 150 days. If Congress does not step in, it could expire, but Trump seems ready to fight for more permanent changes.

How China and the EU Reacted
China did not wait long to respond. Their commerce ministry called Trump’s tariffs “unilateral” and unfair. They said the US should cancel these measures right away. A spokesperson added that trade wars have no winners and protectionism does not help anyone in the long run. China also said they are carefully studying the Supreme Court ruling to see what it means for their side.
The European Union took a similar step. EU lawmakers decided to freeze a planned trade deal with the US. This deal, agreed last year, would have removed tariffs on many industrial goods between the two sides. A vote to approve it was set for soon, but now it’s on hold. This shows how quickly Trump’s tariff warning is affecting real talks and agreements.

Why Tariffs Are Such a Big Deal
Tariffs are basically taxes on goods coming into a country. When the US puts high tariffs on imports, foreign products cost more for American buyers. Trump has always said this protects US jobs and factories from cheap foreign goods. He points to years of trade deficits where other countries sell far more to the US than they buy back.
But critics say tariffs raise prices for everyday people—think higher costs for cars, electronics, clothes, and food. They can also start trade fights where countries hit back with their own tariffs, hurting exporters on all sides.
This latest round adds more uncertainty. Businesses that rely on global supply chains now face questions about costs and planning. Stock markets reacted with some ups and downs, and companies are watching closely for what comes next.

What Could Happen Next?
Trump’s strong words show he is not backing down on trade protection. Even with the Supreme Court loss on emergency tariffs, he found another way to push forward. Countries like China and EU members are pushing back, calling for fair talks instead of threats.
If things heat up, we could see more tariff hikes, broken deals, or even a wider trade conflict. On the other hand, it might force everyone back to the table for better agreements.
For now, the world is paying close attention to US tariffs and Trump’s next moves. Trade rules affect jobs, prices, and economies everywhere—including here in Pakistan. Keep watching this story as it develops.
